La Lola's Gender Crisis
Article posted October 07, 2008
'La Lola' is just around the corner, and the people behind the program gives the press one night that will definitely be hard to forget: a night of magic, a night of romance—and a night of non-stop one-liners from Direk Dominic Zapata. It was really a night to remember. Text by Jason John S. Lim. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio.
Beginning October 13, La Lola will begin airing part of GMA Telebabad, replacing the laughter-filled Ako si Kim Samsoon. But fans of light programming should not fret as La Lola is already proving to be a worthy replacement—if just for its director's non-stop funny asides.
stars"Hindi po totoo 'yung rumor na may pinapauso kaming bago: Rhianovela? Wala pong ganoon," Director Dominic Zapata delivers with a straight face. The director is making a play at the issues already surrounding the show before it even begins. But what follows is no joke.
"This is an Argentinian soap," the director says of La Lola. And through a presentation, the people behind the program have shown just how popular that series has gotten—earning remakes throughout the world, including the US, Vietnam and parts of Europe. Direk Dom continues, "Now that we're going global, tama lang na gawin natin 'to—para hindi naman tayo nahuhuli sa daigdig ng show business."
La Lola is the story of a playboy business magnate who scorned the wrong woman—and gets turned into a woman for his mistakes. And starring as the playboy is Wendell Ramos, before he gets turned into a woman: Rhian Ramos .
"Gusto ko pong magpasalamat sa GMA," Rhian begins, saying that La Lola is her biggest project so far. "Sobrang excited ako para gawin 'to, ginagawa ko talaga 'yung best ko at binubuhos ko lahat ng energy ko, buong puso ko, sa project na 'to.
"So thank you Ma'am Wilma [Galvante], Ma'am Lilybeth [Rasonable], Miss Cheryl [Ching-Sy]—you take such good care of me. Maraming-maraming salamat po sa mga directors namin. And si Miss Edlyn [Tallada-Abuel], napakabait niya sa aming lahat. Mommy, ate, she’'s whatever you need her to be."
According to Direk Dom, the cast of La Lola is the biggest high-caliber powerhouse cast he has handled so far. And with Eddie Garcia, Jackie Lou Blanco, Eula Valdez, Marvin Agustin , Angelika dela Cruz, Keempee de Leon, Gladys Reyes and so on—well, you can see he's not joking.
But it seems someone else is: "La Eula po ito," Eula says on the mic, eliciting laughs from the press people in attendance. The veteran actress last seen in Carlo J. Caparas' Kamandag says she's thankful to be part of La Lola. "Excited na po akong mag-start ng taping."
Another cast member making the press laugh is Keempee, who starts with the usual "I'm so proud to be one of them." He says that the whole cast, the whole crew is really working hard to give everything they’ve got to the program—"talagang hanggang umaga." That's before he slips into character, and finishes with a very queer delivery of: "Kaya please ha? Okay, watch."
And to get back at Direk Dom for putting them on the spot, Jay R teases, "We would like to thank Direk Dominic for putting us on the spot, and making me speak—but I also wanna say na: dapat siguro kanta na lang ako."
The cast is already ready to make audiences laugh—and the wait is almost over. La Lola begins on October 13, after Mars Ravelo's Dyesebel. Talk about the show with other Kapuso fans at the iGMA Forums!
La Lola also stars JC de Vera, Yul Servo, Lovi Poe, Marky Cielo, Patricia Ismael, Robert Villar, Isabel Granada, and in very special roles, Jewel Mische and Miss Iza Calzado.
